I was taught in school that the universe is really old. I also heard that C.S. Lewis believes that Genesis 1 fits within a genre of 'poetic myth', and that its author would have never intended to be taken literally in its assertion that creation took 6 days. Moreover,
Lewis allegedly believed that the Genesis 1 account borrowed from other creation accounts on purpose, but purposely modified its own version to assert that God created the earth vs. the pagan notion that gods were formed out of the earth. Here is a link to the article I came across.

I cannot see any way to either prove or disprove C.S. Lewis' view of Genesis 1, given that there are no other biblical writings that are like Genesis 1 in regards to their genre. For me, there seems to be know one way or the other if Genesis 1 is meant to be read for its concepts and principles (e.g. expressions like "the four corners of the earth" = "the entire surface of the earth"), or if it is meant to be read as conveying literal and scientifically accurate history.
What do the rest of you think?
