Genesis 1-3: List of Questions

1. After the mess-up of his creatures, why did God not start with a clean slate?

  • After Adam and Eve partook of the fruit, why did God let them live? Could he not have started out fresh by killing the original Adam and Eve and creating another man and another woman? Is it that God knew that he would have countless more Adams and Eves take after the original Adam and Eve--so it was pointless for him to start fresh with a new version of Adam and Eve? Could it be that God wanted an Adam and Eve in his garden so badly that he risked the possibility of mess-ups anyway? Or is it just because he knew he was sovereign despite how severe the mess-up is?

  • After the serpent deceived the woman, why did God punish the serpent with the curse to eat dust all his days and his enmity against the woman and her offspring? Was the curse a more severe punishment than immediate death?

  • If I were to watch a movie today, starring people facing a similar predicament, a very possible ending to a story between a father and his disobedient children could be: The father gets pissed really bad by his disobedient son who listened to his wife more than the father's command. It creates a problem big enough that the father orders the execution of his son and his wife. He also calls for the serpent figure and orders that person to be executed for leading his son and son's wife away from him. Years later, the father has another son and this time, he makes sure that his son does not interact with any other figure but him. He and his son live happily ever after in a secluded island, isolated from any woman and any other creature who can influence him.

2. Why did God put the tree of the knowledge of good and evil there in the first place?

  • God must have known that Eve would be vulnerable to the serpent, so why did he make the forbidden tree in the first place? And if God wanted Adam and Eve to not eat it, why did he not place the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree, just as he did for the tree of life afterwards? Could it be that were Adam and Eve to partake the Tree of Life first that it would be fine to partake the Forbidden Tree?
